What Are Verrucas & Warts?

Verrucas and warts are common skin conditions caused by certain types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) which enters the skin through tiny breaks in its surface. Although generally harmless, they can sometimes become uncomfortable, persistent or difficult to manage.

• Verrucas develop on the soles of the feet and may appear flattened or grow inwards due to pressure from standing and walking. They can develop beneath an area of hard skin and may cause discomfort, particularly on weight-bearing areas.
• Common warts typically appear on the hands and fingers as small, raised growths with a rough surface.

Both can occur individually or in clusters and may contain tiny dark dots, which are associated with small blood vessels.

Although many verrucas and warts eventually resolve naturally, some persist for months or even years. Treatment may be considered when they become painful, spread or cause concern.

What Is Verrutop?

Verrutop is a specialist topical treatment containing a combination of organic acids and nitric acid. It acts on the affected tissue, causing changes that help the tissue to gradually shed.

Unlike surgical removal, Verrutop does not involve cutting out the verruca or wart.

The number of treatments required depends on the size, location and response of the verruca or wart.

What Happens During Treatment?

Initial Assessment - Before beginning treatment, the affected area will be carefully examined to assess whether Verrutop is appropriate.

For clients attending with verrucas on their feet, this assessment forms part of a comprehensive foot health consultation, which also allows any additional foot health concerns to be identified and addressed.

Clients attending solely for warts on their hands can book a dedicated assessment.

Preparation & Application - At each treatment appointment, the affected area is carefully assessed and prepared. This involves reducing the overlying hard skin and HPV tissue using specialist instruments. This preparation is an essential part of the treatment and is included in the application fee. Verrucas and warts contain tiny blood vessels, and pinpoint bleeding can occasionally occur during preparation.

Once the area has been prepared, Verrutop is carefully applied to the affected tissue.

Some clients may experience temporary stinging or discomfort during or following application.

Treatment Progression - Verrutop is applied at approximately two-week intervals, with progress assessed at each appointment. Treatment continues only when clinically appropriate and may be stopped when the verruca or wart has resolved.

Where further treatment is considered necessary, a break may be recommended before reassessment.

For clients receiving regular foot care, Verrutop appointments can be coordinated with their usual six-weekly foot health appointments, reducing the need for additional visits.

General foot care is optional and charged separately.

Verrutop Home-Care - Following each Verrutop appointment, applications of surgical spirit is recommended twice daily between scheduled appointments and during any planned treatment break. This assists the treated tissue to dry out and shed as treatment progresses.

You should avoid picking or forcibly removing treated tissue and follow the aftercare instructions provided.

Maintaining good hand and foot hygiene, avoiding sharing personal items such as towels and keeping affected areas appropriately covered where necessary can also help reduce the risk of spreading HPV.

Is Verrutop Suitable for Everyone?

Verrutop may be suitable for adults and children aged six years and over. However, it is not appropriate for every client or every type of skin lesion.

Verrutop is not offered during pregnancy or to clients with diabetes. Certain medical conditions, circulation problems, skin conditions or other factors may also make treatment unsuitable.

A full assessment is therefore essential before beginning treatment and if Verrutop is not appropriate, alternative options will be discussed.

How Successful Is Verrutop?

The response to Verrutop varies between individuals.

Some verrucas and warts respond after relatively few applications, while others may require a longer treatment period and some may not resolve completely.

Factors such as the size, location and duration of the lesion, can influence the outcome.

Although Verrutop can be an effective treatment option, complete clearance cannot be guaranteed, and verrucas or warts may occasionally recur.

Your progress will be monitored throughout treatment, with further applications recommended only when appropriate.

One vial is generally sufficient to treat multiple verrucas or warts during the same appointment. In the uncommon event that extensive treatment requires a second vial, an additional £50 charge applies. This will be discussed before treatment.

Where suitable, the first Verrutop application can be carried out during your initial consultation or assessment, with the application charged separately.

Can Verrutop treat warts on the hands as well as verrucas?

Yes. At MEDI-BLISS, Verrutop is available for suitable verrucae on the feet and warts on the hands. An assessment is required before treatment to confirm suitability.

Does the Verrutop treatment hurt?

Some clients experience little discomfort, while others notice temporary stinging, burning or tenderness. Your comfort is monitored throughout the appointment, and possible reactions are discussed before treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of applications varies according to the size, location and response of the verruca or wart. Progress is reviewed at each appointment, and clearance cannot be guaranteed.

Is Verrutop suitable for everyone?

No. At MEDI-BLISS, Verrutop is not offered to clients with diabetes or children under six. It is also unsuitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding and for certain circulation or nerve conditions. Your medical history and the treatment area are checked before proceeding.

Will I need to do anything between appointments?

Yes. You will receive specific home-care instructions, including how to use surgical spirit where appropriate. Follow these instructions carefully and avoid using additional wart or verruca treatments unless advised.
