What is a Wart or Verruca?
A lesion caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that can appear anywhere on the hand or foot.
Located on the sole of the foot these lesions are called Verrucas, located anywhere else on the body they are called warts. Although generally considered harmless, both can be painful and unsightly, causing discomfort and even embarrassment.
Many resolve without treatment, particularly in children, but in adults they can be be difficult to manage, persisting for many years.
Warts or Verrucas that have been present for over 6 months are generally more resistant to treatment, than those which have been present for less.
How can you get them?
HPV is usually spread by direct skin to skin contact, or indirectly via contact with contaminated floors and surfaces. The virus gains entry through tiny breaks in the skin which may, or may not, be visible to the naked eye. Walking on abrasive non slip flooring, such as the type found at swimming pools, can cause these minor abrasions on the soles of the feet, which is why we often associate verrucas with swimming.
Anyone can catch the HPV virus but they are particularly common in children. It is estimated that between 7-12 % of the population have some form of wart and approximately 41% of the population will get a verruca at some stage of their lives. Similarly to the Chicken Pox virus, once you have been exposed HPV stays with you for life, whether you have lesions or not.
Why are they so difficult to treat?
Verrucas and warts are one of the most challenging dermatological skin conditions to treat.
The virus invades the outermost layer of the skin causing a visible lesion presented as a patch of hard or rubbery skin. Our immune system is located slightly deeper in the skin which means the virus can go unnoticed by the immune system. Warts are more receptive to treatment due to there porous structure and location above the surface of the skin. By comparison Verrucas on the soles of our feet are compacted and lie beneath the skin as a result of constant pressure from body weight.
Please be aware that treatments for warts or verrucas are a slow process which requires commitment to the treatment plan and elimination is NOT ALWAYS GUARANTEED
Verrutop®️ is a clinical topical solution, for the treatment of warts and verrucas.
Formulated with the Nitrizinc Complex®️ it contains a unique combination of Nitric acid, Organic acids and Zn + Cu salts. It is not a painful treatment, however as sensitivity varies with each individual, some people may experience varying degrees of stinging after application of the product.
The little black dots, more often seen in verrucas than warts, are small capillary blood vessels. If a wart or verruca bleeds during scalpel work, this is quite normal especially during the early treatment period.
To maximise results treatment requires the following homecare:
TWO applications of Surgical spirits over the lesion EVERY DAY – This will dry out the surface of the lesion which can be removed at each appointment along with a layer of the viral tissue.
One course of Verrutop consists of 7 appointments spaced 7-14 days apart.
During the 7th session, treatment is assessed. If the lesion still remains, but progress is being made, a follow up course will start after a 6 week rest period.
Applied over time, Verrutop®️ produces a mummification of the viral tissue that causes the wart/verruca to eventually detach leaving the underlying skin healthy and lesion free.
