A Fungal nail treatment with Photodisinfection
Light Therapy Treatments have been used in Oncology and Dermatology, worldwide scale, for many years; and ToeFX technology emerged from a research program at McMaster University in Canada.
Backed by years of clinical study and data, ToeFX Light Therapy is one of the first Photodisinfection systems, clinically authorised, for the specific treatment of MODERATE to SEVERE Onychomycosis (Fungal Nail Infections)
Fungal nail symptoms primarily present with a discoloured visual appearance. Secondary nail infections have a musty smell and increased thickness, with a soft or crumbly structure.
Most people are primarily concerned with appearance; but hiding toes away in enclosed footwear (especially during the summer months) provides the infection with exactly the right environment to thrive and spread.
Clinical studies show that 10-20% of the general population, and over 50-60% of seniors, have a fungal nail infection. It’s a challenging disorder to treat, especially with very thick nails, due to the source of infection being in the skin, underneath the nail.
Over-the-counter products offer very slow results and prescription oral medications, such as Terbinafine, have unpleasant side effects. When you combine these factors with the difficulty to get help on the NHS, it creates a mindset for acceptance and therefore neglect.
ToeFX Light Therapy offers an easy, effective, non-surgical solution with no side effects.
The treatment comprises 2 products: A Serum + Red Light Therapy
The technology of the two, work together to stimulate the production of reactive molecules, which effectively destroy the membrane of the fungal cells. Without this membrane the cells can not survive.
The ToeFX Serum is a non-toxic formulation containing a BLUE DYE molecule which is attracted to, and binds only to, fungal micro-organisms. The serum has a lower surface tension than water, making it very easily absorbed by the nail into the skin underneath.
The serum is delivered via a single-use pen, after the nail has been heavily debrided (Electronically thinned), or Clear-A-Nail Fenestrated (drilled with tiny holes), or BOTH.
The infected nails are treated with the serum and it’s left to absorb for 15 minutes. The feet are then placed under a ToeFX Red Light Therapy Unit for a further 15 minutes to complete the treatment.
The 660nm red light activates a photochemical reaction (in the serum) destroying fungal cell membranes with every application.
The treatment procedure is very quick and very easy. You are not required to perform any home-care treatment between appointments, apart from making a few adjustments to foot hygiene, explained during your consultation. This is a huge advantage compared to over-the-counter products, which require daily compliance to maximise the chances of success.
Visible results for many fungal nail treatments are typically slow. Partly because we can’t influence the growth of a healthy nail, leaving the damaged area of the nail visible for a long time.
However, due to the BLUE DYE molecules in the ToeFX Serum, visible results start to appear very quickly. The serum will only attach to a fungal organism, and photographs taken at each appointment continuously show reducing areas of blue dye, keeping you motivated throughout the treatment.
Before starting treatment, a diagnostic fungal nail test is required, to establish a positive test result. Not all discoloured or thickened toenails are fungal infected but the Dermatophyte Test (conducted in the clinic) will give instant results from a small nail clipping.
The 1st appointment will vary in time & cost according to how many nails require heavy debridement or fenestration. After this, the treatment time (45 minutes) & cost is the same.
The course consists of 8-10 x serum applications (2 weeks apart), followed by several ‘Monitoring’ foot care appointments (4 weeks apart) to detect any signs of trace infection.
Finally, the nails are retested.
