What is Toeflex Nail Reconstruction?

Toeflex is a professional toenail reconstruction system that uses a flexible material to recreate or enhance the appearance of a damaged nail.

The material is applied to the prepared natural nail, carefully shaped and finished to create a realistic appearance that complements your other toenails.

Unlike conventional cosmetic nail enhancements, Toeflex is designed specifically for toenails, where flexibility and comfort are particularly important.

Toeflex is not a treatment for the underlying cause of nail damage and any existing nail conditions will be assessed before reconstruction to ensure the procedure is appropriate.

Who Can Benefit from Toeflex?

Toeflex may be suitable for toenails affected by:

• Accidental injury or trauma
• Partial nail loss
• Cracked, split or damaged nails
• Irregular or distorted nail growth
• Nail changes following previous surgery
• Discolouration or cosmetic damage

Reconstruction may also be considered for certain nails previously affected by fungal infection, provided the underlying nail and surrounding skin are suitable.

Not every damaged nail can be reconstructed safely. An assessment is always carried out before application, and any concerns about nail health will be discussed with you.

Full Nail Reconstruction

Full nail reconstruction is suitable when sufficient healthy natural nail remains to support the reconstruction. Ideally, approximately 50% of the natural nail should remain to provide a suitable foundation.

Temporary Prosthetic Toenails

Where very little or no natural nail remains, a temporary prosthetic toenail may be possible.

Unlike a full reconstruction, a prosthetic nail has little or no natural nail to support its attachment. Although the Toeflex material can initially adhere to the skin during application, this attachment is temporary.

In my clinical experience, prosthetics applied directly to the skin generally detach naturally within approximately 12 hours. Where a small amount of natural nail remains, attachment may last longer.

Temporary prosthetic nails are therefore best suited to special occasions or situations where a short-term cosmetic improvement is desired.

Following Toeflex application an appropriate skin-safe adhesive tape is recommended, allowing you to temporarily reattach it when required.

The consultation, foot care and reconstruction can normally be completed during one extended appointment, provided the nail is suitable.

How Long Does Toeflex Last?

A Toeflex reconstruction is a temporary cosmetic enhancement, and its durability depends on factors including the condition of the natural nail, nail growth, footwear and everyday activities.

To protect the health of the natural nail, reconstructions should be professionally removed within eight weeks. At this follow-up appointment, the underlying nail and surrounding skin are carefully examined.

If everything remains healthy, a new reconstruction can usually be applied immediately.

If any concerns are identified, I may recommend leaving the nail uncovered until the underlying condition has been addressed.

Regular maintenance helps preserve both the appearance of your reconstruction and the health of your natural nail.

Caring for Your Toeflex Reconstruction

Following your appointment, a few simple precautions can help maintain your reconstruction:

• Avoid getting the reconstruction wet for 24hrs after application.
• Wear comfortable footwear with sufficient room around the toes.
• Avoid unnecessary pressure or trauma to the reconstructed nail.
• Do not pick, pull or attempt to remove the reconstruction yourself.
• Avoid cutting or filing the reconstruction unless specifically advised.
• Keep your feet clean and dry, paying particular attention to the surrounding skin.
• Contact the clinic if you notice lifting, discomfort, redness or changes beneath the reconstruction.
• Arrange professional removal and assessment within eight weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Toeflex help my natural nail grow back?

Toeflex creates the appearance of a more complete toenail. It does not repair the nail’s growth centre or guarantee that a damaged nail will regrow normally.

Does Toeflex treat fungal nail infections?

No. Toeflex is a cosmetic reconstruction, rather than an antifungal treatment. If a fungal infection is suspected or confirmed, suitability and any treatment requirements will be discussed before reconstruction.

Can I have a natural finish without polish?

Yes. Toeflex can be finished to give a natural-looking appearance and is suitable for both men and women. Shellac gel polish is an optional extra.

How long will my reconstruction last?

This varies according to the amount and condition of the remaining nail, footwear, activity and home care. Where little or no natural nail remains, secure attachment is less predictable and a temporary, removable option may be more appropriate.

Does the reconstruction need to be removed?

Yes. It needs professional removal at the agreed review appointment so the underlying nail and skin can be checked. Avoid pulling or picking it off yourself.

Can a new reconstruction be applied at the same appointment?

Yes, provided the underlying nail and skin are healthy and suitable. If a concern is found, the nail may need to remain uncovered while the issue is addressed.
