“ Onyfix is a revolutionary nail correction system which takes ingrown or involuted toenails back to their original shape without the need for surgery – Perfect for anyone including children and Diabetics ”
What is an Involuted Nail? This refers to a nail that changes its shape as it grows, encroaching into the surrounding skin causing pain. The transverse shape of a normal, healthy nail is a gentle curve. If the transverse shape is like a letter ‘n’ (turned down at the sides) or like a horseshoe (curving inward) then the nail is described as being involuted.
What is an Ingrown Nail? One that has been badly cut, leaving a spike at the side, or one that has surpassed its extreme shape and is now piercing the skin. Both cause pain, inflammation and sometimes infection.
Onyfix®️ is a nail bracing system, developed in Germany, to effectively treat these nail types. It eliminates the need for nail surgery, requires no needles, no anaesthetic and no recovery time. It’s simple, effective design requires no specific aftercare and allows you to continue with your normal daily activities.
Treatment involves multiple brace applications, attached one at a time, which move up the length of the nail as it grows. The braces are bonded to the surface of the nail, just above the cuticle, in the form of a soft composite band. The band is then hardened by a curing process with a BLUE LED light. As it hardens it also shrinks, creating enough tension to gently ‘pull up’ the curved sides of the nail. Holding it in this position, it remains in place as the nail grows, preventing the nail from changing shape. You can not feel this tension, it is very gentle but effective.
On average a single Onyfix®️ band will remain securely in place for approximately 3 months. After this period there is usually enough space, due to nail growth, to apply a new band beneath it.
A minimum of 4 bands are required, as your nail is corrected over time, but more may be needed depending on the severity of the involution. You may also require an additional ½ bar or T-bar, with the 1st application, to relieve any pressure.
To be successful the bands must remain securely attached at all times to maintain the tension on the nail. If a band detaches, cracks or loses its grip at the sides, the band must be replaced. If the band detaches within 24 hours of application it will be re-applied free of charge; after this period you will be charged for any replacements. If you’re very active, for example a daily swimmer, runner or walker, bands may need to be replaced more frequently due to excessive exposure to chlorine or frequent pressure on the bands.
Assessment of your nails is always required before deciding if you are able to go ahead with Onyfix®️
If you have an infected ingrown nail this would need to be resolved prior to treatment. Minor infections can be treated at Medi-Bliss, but beyond this, antibiotics from your GP would be required.
