Understanding Curved and Ingrown Toenails
Involuted (curved)Toenails
An involuted toenail curls excessively on one side or both, creating pressure along the edges and corners of the nail. The curvature can range from mild to severe making everyday activities uncomfortable, particularly when wearing enclosed footwear.
An involuted nail is not necessarily ingrown, however the excessive curvature can increase pressure on the surrounding skin and may contribute to recurring problems.
Ingrown Toenails
An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or a small spike of nail penetrates or irritates the surrounding skin. This can cause tenderness, redness, swelling and sometimes infection.
How Does ONYFIX Work?
The ONYFIX system uses a specially developed composite material that is applied directly to the surface of the toenail. The material is shaped into a small band and hardened using a blue light technology. Unlike traditional metal nail braces, ONYFIX does not rely on hooks or wires positioned beneath the nail edges.
The system works with the natural growth of the nail. The discreet brace remains attached as the nail grows. helping to reduce the curvature gradually over time.
The application itself is non-invasive and does not require local anaesthetic injections.
Depending on the severity of the curvature, different bracing techniques may be used, and multiple applications may be necessary.

Not every painful or ingrown toenail is suitable for bracing. An assessment is essential to establish the cause of the discomfort, examine the nail and surrounding skin, and determine the most appropriate treatment.
Where infection, significant inflammation or another complication is present, this may need to be addressed before bracing can be considered. Medical assessment or referral may sometimes be necessary.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
Initial Consultation and Assessment
New clients begin with a General Foot Health Consultation.
This includes an assessment of your nails and skin, discussion of your concerns and relevant medical history, appropriate foot care treatment and personalised advice.
If ONYFIX is suitable and there is sufficient time, a brace may be fitted during the same appointment.
Where the nail requires more extensive preparation or treatment before bracing, a separate appointment will be arranged at an appropriate time.
If ONYFIX is not suitable, alternative care and treatment options will be discussed.
ONYFIX Brace Application
The nail is carefully prepared before the composite brace is applied and cured using Blue LED light technology.
Once fitted, the brace remains attached and moves naturally up the nail as it grows.
The number of applications required varies according to the nail’s curvature, growth rate and response to treatment.
Your Ongoing ONYFIX Treatment Plan
ONYFIX is a gradual treatment, and maintaining the nail throughout the process is an important part of your care. The aim is to improve the nail shape long term while reducing pressure and discomfort where possible short term.
Follow-up Foot Health Appointments
I recommend returning every 6–8 weeks for nail care and brace monitoring.
During these appointments, the nail can be carefully trimmed and maintained, areas of pressure managed and the position and condition of the brace checked.
Other nail or skin concerns, including corns and callus, can also be treated when appropriate.
Brace Replacement
An ONYFIX brace does not need to be replaced at every follow-up appointment.
As your nail grows, the brace is monitored and replaced only when necessary. On average a band is replaced every 3 months however, some clients may require more frequent applications than others.
If a brace becomes detached or damaged between your regular appointments, a separate brace-only appointment can be arranged.
Caring for Your ONYFIX Brace
Following application, you will receive advice on caring for your brace between appointments.
The brace is designed to remain attached during normal daily activities, although premature detachment can occasionally occur. Advise will include:

When a new brace is required during a follow-up appointment, the appropriate brace charge is added to the foot care fee.
ONYFIX Brace-Only Appointments
If a brace needs replacing between follow-up appointments, due to damage or detachment, you will only be charged for the new brace and its application.
This appointment does not replace any follow-up appointment needed for necessary nail care.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ONYFIX the same as nail surgery?
No. ONYFIX uses a composite band attached to the nail surface to guide its shape as it grows. It does not involve surgically removing part of the nail. An assessment establishes whether this approach is appropriate for you.
Does fitting an ONYFIX band hurt?
The band is applied to the nail surface without cutting into the surrounding skin. Application is generally comfortable, although an already painful toe may be sensitive during preparation.
How quickly will my nail improve?
Correction takes place gradually as the nail grows. The time needed depends on your nail’s growth rate, shape and severity of curvature. More than one band may be needed during treatment.
Will I still need regular foot care?
Yes. At MEDI-BLISS, appointments are generally recommended every six to eight weeks for foot care, nail trimming and monitoring. Bands are replaced when required rather than automatically at every visit.
What should I do if the band comes off?
Contact the clinic for advice and avoid trying to reattach it yourself. If a replacement is needed following premature detachment, a band-only appointment can be arranged and is charged at the applicable brace fee.
