An Effective Treatment For Mild-Moderate Fungal Nail Infections

A Fungal Nail Infection is caused by a skin infection called Athlete’s Foot. This infection often starts on the sole of the foot and remains symptom free until it spreads to between the toes and it starts to burn or itch. But when it spreads to the skin underneath the toenails, the spores from the fungal organism invade the nail itself. These spores are responsible for the nail discolouration and the thick, crumbling texture that we all know as symptoms of a fungal nail infection.

It can be difficult for over the counter anti-fungal solutions to reach the source of infection but the CLEAR-A-NAIL treatment enables topical products to penetrate through the nail, directly to the skin underneath both safely and effectively.

 
CLEAR-A-NAIL is a Class I medical device that uses a controlled micro-penetration (CMP) system to drill tiny holes into the nail without risk of injury. The computer-controlled device uses a fine, sterile micro-needle to break through the surface of the nail. The devise detects the needle entry level and automatically retracts after a preset depth of less than 1mm.

During treatment multiple micro holes, only 0.4mm in diameter, are created to perforate the surface of the infected nail.

Fungal nails are thicker than healthy nails and you are unlikely to feel anything other than pressure and vibration during treatment. Irregularities in thickness can occur and in some areas you may, for a split second, feel some discomfort; indicating that the needle is close to the skin. This discomfort is minimal and actually a positive result, indicating that the needle has reached the source of infection.

One Clear-A-Nail treatment is usually sufficient for a mild infection and a two for a moderate infection. Regular follow up appointments will also be required to remove excess nail debris and assist with nail growth. As the fungal spores in the infected area of the nail start to die, this part of the nail often disintegrates. This should be anticipated as a normal response to any fungal nail treatment.

Early signs of improvement may appear within 16 weeks, but full regrowth of a healthy nail can take 12 months and in some cases even longer. Improvements in the nail will depend on individual nail growth, consistency of after care and how well the body responds to treatment.

Before proceeding a positive Fungal Nail diagnosis is required as not all discoloured or thickened toenails are fungal infected. This can be done in-clinic, with a five-minute Dermatophyte test, using clippings from your nail. The test results will also determine the type of fungus present and therefore the best topical solution.

After treatment, daily homecare applications of a prescribed topical fungal solution (supplied by the clinic) will be required for a minimum 8 weeks

You will also need to routinely change your socks and treat your shoes with an anti-fungal product to reduce possible reinfection.
